Ladybird Survey

Ladybirds are among the most popular of insects – for many people they are associated with gardens and warm summer days.  They can be found in many different places though, including coasts, mountains and town centres.  The most abundant species is the 7-spot ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata), with its characteristic red wing cases with black spots.

Many British species of ladybird are thought to be declining, both in numbers and distribution.  The extent of he decline is difficult to assess due to the natural fluctuations in ladybird population levels and the lack of data available.

We would like your help to find out what ladybirds can be found in your area.  Have a look in your garden, or in the park for ladybirds.  You can use our special recording sheet to note your findings.  Colour in the picture, making sure

that you put the right number of spots on your ladybird.  Remember to colour in the legs with the right colour and to draw any pattern on the head.
